The Furball Zone

A Chairy Tale (Tail?)

I have two newly (well, not so new now!) re-covered wingback chairs that have been in our family for about 40 years. On the underside of these chairs, the upholsterer tacked some shiny black sort'a stretchy fabric. About 1 year ago, my daughter, Celeste in a fit of pique took her little index finger and poked holes through this black underlining -- on both chairs, no less. Needless to say, once the parental explosion was over I thought I'd tape the poked parts up so that they wouldn't dangle down and tempt kitty paws. Let's just say that the re-taping process went through about 3 incarnations. In between tapings, Omar and Midnight "helped" the holes along and I found bits and pieces of torn black fabric underneath the chairs and in other locations where the "prey" had been dragged.

Well, one chair yesterday had a black underside-ectomy yesterday when I noticed that my black cat Midnight had discovered a totally awesome kitty hideout inside one of the chairs' undersides. Dangly "Middy" bits were overflowing through holes of various sizes! Celeste and I teased these bits and narrowly escaped kitty claws of death! The fabric was strained to bursting with Midnight sequestered in her cozy little cat hammock and I was so tempted to take a photo (but the lighting was so bad, the cat and fabric were black, etc.). Finally, her majesty deigned to descend from her bower and sauntered off to the kitchen. Unfortunately, the chair was suffering so I performed the underside-ectomy as quickly as possible. Midnight returned, looked a bit nonplussed but took it in stride....

Will keep you posted about chair #2.
