Leo-cat & Miss Melonie

"Miss Melonie" is our grey tiger cat. She's approximately six years old. We adopted through Open Your Heart. She was a pregnant feral "turnpike" cat that was rescued to give her a "home" environment rather than a noisy, stressful shelter to give birth to her litter. She was less than a year old and gave birth to two kitties - Cosmo and Toby who were adopted through Open Your Heart, too. Melonie was approximately 1½ years old when I saw a photo of her, and she touched the hole in my heart left after our "Bernie-cat", a fourteen-year-old male grey tiger cat died due to lymphosarcomas in 1992. Miss Melonie was adopted in September 1995.

Miss Melonie does a good short, trumpet-like "eowl" when the boys send her in to get food or treats! Her persistent "eowl" can be like fingernails scraping on a chalk-blackboard! It gets immediate attention!

Miss Melonie likes to watch TV, especially nature scenes, kittens playing, birds or wildlife. She keeps to herself, but always chooses a quiet time during the day for pets from her adopted Mom. She LOVES Leo, but Leo has been a bachelor for so long, he really doesn't have a clue!

"Leo-cat" is our orange tiger cat, adopted from a pet shop in 1987. He is the longest (length) cat. He survived a bladder rupture (due to a feline urinary syndrome obstruction) in 1993! Our vet, Dr. Charles Schwirk, fortunately repaired his bladder and resected the ureter to the internal sphincter. He's our $1,000 plus domestic cat! Worth every penny! He's very affectionate and loves to have his belly rubbed.

Leo-cat doesn't really give a traditional meow...he woofs! It's not a good dog woof or bark, but it's a definite "woof!" He likes to "talk" to me in the morning, after he patiently waits next to me while I'm sleeping in our bed. He does a good "yowl" when he wants to be fed in the kitchen!

"Mister Christofur" cat was adopted by Charles from a local farm, during a preschool field trip in 1994. He's our tuxedo cat. His favorite drink is water out of the faucet and often! He jumps into any sink he thinks you'll open for him anytime, but it has to be just a trickle and he gets his head soaked while he drinks from the bottom. He doesn't meow unless there's a bug to hunt! He has a very "little" voice for a big cat! He also likes to chase a laser light spot, a toy which his favorite human, my husband Ed enjoys playing with him.

Now, they all like to watch "A Video for Your Cat" which was Miss Melonie's Christmas gift.

"No, I'm not Busterfur Jones. Got Kibble?"

Just a simple portrait photo in our kitchen.
We also call Mister Christofur "Bubba".

Here's old Leo cat, almost 14 years old. Chronic Renal Failure, Hyperthyroid, Irritable Bowel, a bit senile and forgetful, and a heart of gold. He always comes to sit in my lap when I'm working on the computer.
Dear sweet Miss Melonie, her heart still belongs to old Leo who has no idea why she is so devoted to him. Melonie enjoys hunting toy fur mice during the night. We keep about a dozen or more in a basket and in the morning, we find them all over the house. Sometimes, she'll carry one of the toy mice in her mouth and then loudly meow calling all her kitties for a little mice feast. She's a sweetheart. She's still very cautious and shy, but comes daily to me for a dose of healthy cat pets and brushing.

This is a photo of the dears in our Ohio family room after we got new furniture. Yes, Navy blue corduroy! A Cat hair magnet, but pillow soft cushions that we all enjoy snuggling together on them.

Here's Miss Josie (my sister's cat, my neice-cat) having a jellicle moment with Aunt Cathy's shoes. (She really likes my shoes!) Josie really tickles our funny bones when I take my shoes off. Personally, I think she's partial to Dexter's leather shoes.

Miss Josie passed away peacefully at home in 2006. She lived to a ripe old age of 15 despite health problems during the last 5 years. She was dearly loved and a good cat and member of the family.

On Easter Saturday at Midnight, "Precious" who was an adopted rescue cat, that Charles and I adopted in 1994 from New Jersey for my (now deceased 2003) Mom in Pennsylvania, was delivered to us after a divided flight from my father's home in North Carolina by our daughter Carolyn. My father was no longer able to properly care for her. "Precious" is fifteen years old and as playful and loving as a kitten. She is a genuine people cat.

Following the guidelines for combining household cats, we isolated her in a safe area with all the comforts of home - our recreation/computer room that is frequented by all members of the household for one week. Charles actually slept in the same room on the sofa-bed to keep her company. Then, she was gradually introduced to the other two feline members and the rest of the house.

It has worked very well. Miss Melonie now has a sister-cat and Mister Christofur shares a civil distance as dictated by Miss Kitty. Charles and I feel as if our kitty connection with Mom has been brought full-circle. I get to talk privately with Miss Kitty about our dear Mom and she purrs.
