CAT PHILES

The Cat Ascendant

A Cat of the Confederacy

I’m a Cat of the Confederacy
And I will have you know
That when the shot begins to fly
I never go below.

And from the ramparts, perched on high,
I howl derisive thoughts:
Contemptuous noise-hisses, growls-
And other choice bon mots.

And when the boys need palliatives
To keep the pain at bay,
I’m there with grace and quiet Voice
For comfort-in my way.

For I distract them from their cares
With thoughtful close attention.
And my efforts have been recognized-
In dispatches I’ve had mention!

And when the boys go hungry
Or weak with thinned stew,
I’m right there amongst them all
And I am hungry too.

But when the pickings then are good,
Or supplies have made it through,
Then the boys all eat with joyful face.
And so do I-told true.

And I believe as they all do,
These are exciting times.
I wouldn’t miss it, though it’s fact-
It takes a bit of spine.

This is the best place to be
When you’re frisky, strong, and young,
But when the whole thing’s over
I shall lie out in the sun.

And I want to be the chief cat
In people’s history books-
That I was right there in the War
With the risk and guts it took.

And those favored friends who went-
And suffered fought, and died…
Well, their cat went too, and saw the war,
And crouched right by their side.

AUTHOR'S COMMENTS:
  1. The average cat, like the average person is not ready for heroics and will sensibly run for cover then the shot flies, leaving the problems to the trained professionals. Most of my verse has been based on real cats doing real things, but every once in a while some weird happens and verse like this emerges and you’ll just have to overlook it. Nobody’s apologizing here.
  2. Cats also understand when something is bigger than they are and get under cover. The average cat also doesn’t like loud noises (maybe this one’s deaf).
  3. D*gs do this kind of thing, but I think the character of the cat is more in line with the type of spirit that would prompt a young man to run off to experience the war.
  4. There is a real organization of cat lovers called Cats of the Confederacy who collect anecdotes about cats during the Troubles. This verse doesn’t have anything to do with them unless they want to claim it.
