I’m a Cat of the Confederacy And I will have you know That when the shot begins to fly I never go below.
And from the ramparts, perched on high,
And when the boys need palliatives
For I distract them from their cares
And when the boys go hungry
But when the pickings then are good,
And I believe as they all do,
This is the best place to be
And I want to be the chief cat
And those favored friends who went- Copyright © 2000 Sandra Landfried |
AUTHOR'S COMMENTS:
- The average cat, like the average person is not ready for heroics and will sensibly run for cover then the shot flies, leaving the problems to the trained professionals. Most of my verse has been based on real cats doing real things, but every once in a while some weird happens and verse like this emerges and you’ll just have to overlook it. Nobody’s apologizing here.
- Cats also understand when something is bigger than they are and get under cover. The average cat also doesn’t like loud noises (maybe this one’s deaf).
- D*gs do this kind of thing, but I think the character of the cat is more in line with the type of spirit that would prompt a young man to run off to experience the war.
- There is a real organization of cat lovers called Cats of the Confederacy who collect anecdotes about cats during the Troubles. This verse doesn’t have anything to do with them unless they want to claim it.
