I have a wonderful story to tell you. It is not about one of our remarkable little cats, but about a VERY remarkable Big Cat! It will be rather long, I'm afraid, but I think you will enjoy it!Most of you have very probably never heard of Frasier, but he was a Southern California legend -- and I think he got some publicity in the rest of the country, as well.
Not much is known about his early life. He was discovered -- an old, sick, scraggly lion -- in a Mexican zoo. Somehow he was acquired by our Orange County Lion Country. (Lion Country is no longer here, to our great misfortune!) He was treated with great care and love, and slowly he began to regain his health and majestic appearance.
I guess that was not all he regained, because it soon became evident that Frasier was a new father! And again he fathered cubs! And again -- and again! He became a symbol of manhood to all his myriad fans!
I was able to visit Lion Country many times, but I had never seen Frasier, himself. Still, it was always a great experience. Driving through, we had to keep our car windows up -- WE were in the "cages," and THEY were free! (Posted signs said, "Trespassers will be eaten")
One time my son, Rick, and I made the trip. As an artist, I loved being able to sketch the various animals. On this trip, cars were parked here and there at the side of the road, while people snapped pictures of the exquisite creatures. We came upon a spot where maybe 10 or 12 cars were lined up on both sides of the road. Yes, it was Frasier and his pride!
His Royal Highness was asleep and surrounded by his ladies -- all asleep -- except for one. This gorgeous girl sat erect, her slightly suspicious eye watching every movement the onlookers made. If anyone had had the temerity to leave his car, she would have been on him in a second. There was no doubt in our minds -- she was guarding Frasier!
While we watched, she began to yawn. Soon, she padded quietly over to another lady and nudged her -- none too gently! This girl sat up and stretched. The first one settled down to sleep, and the new guard took her place!
I have never, in a long lifetime of loving and observing animals, seen such a positive sign of animal intelligence! How rare and wonderful a thing to see! It was awesome!
Frasier passed over not too long after that, but I am pleased to think that he had a happy and productive (!) old age!
