Here is a suggestion for a great litterbox which is:
- inexpensive;
- works great if you have limited space;
- seals up well, hence limited smell;
- excellent if you have a multiple-cat household;
- also excellent if you have big cats (like my Maine Coon who is almost 20 pounds, hence everything is big in his world);
- leaves no litter on the floor or around the box (and you know how some cats like to dig); and
- comes in many different sizes.
This idea beats an open box. I have seen the closed litterboxes in pet stores, but they are too small (especially if you have three or more cats) and very expensive.
But for a lot less money you can create your own sealed litterbox! When the big stores like K-Mart have a sale you can buy a big plastic storage boxes with the lid. (Even better if the top hinges.) You cut out a door in one end big enough for the biggest cat. Trim the piece you cut out a little bit (maybe 1/4 inch) and with strong tape like duct tape put the cut out piece back in so it is a swinging door. If your kitty likes more light in there cut a good size hole in the top and seal it with heavy clear plastic. Bingo you have a great inexpensive litter box!
The big one I bought was big enough for my three cats including the big Maine Coon. I paid only $7.95 and it had a hinged top. My cats just go in and out, and they don't hang around in there. Boy, it sure reduces the smell and minimizes the mess.
