CAT PHILES

Memories and Friends

Old Friends

I visited two old friends yesterday
Stood beneath the old elm tree where I laid them to rest so long ago
And remembered Marmalade's little orange body, running to me through the grass
Leaping into my arms to lick my face while I hugged her and told her she was my pretty girl
And she would purr, how she would purr as I held her

Podly Bear lying under a bush
The delight on his face as he stalked something in the grass
How proud he was the day he actually caught a mouse
Putting his paw on my knee and showing me his trophy before taking it away
Not bad for a cat that didn't see the outside world till he was eight years old

Told them we lost Kitty summer before last, but reckoned they already knew
As she was there in heaven with them, angels together
Said we still had Tommy, he's getting a bit pudgy, but otherwise in doing well
Reminded them of Inky the black kitten, she's all grown up now and very handsome
We now have her brother Freddy, he's a charcoal tiger and really sweet, but doesn't like to cuddle

Told them about the new kittens, how lively they are
That we named them Tiger and Lillie, but call them Trouble & More Trouble
Always there to see if they could help or just to be in the center of attention
Thought they would like the new place, it's much larger, many more places to play
There were lots of squirrels and birds in the back yard, but Tommy got in a fight with another cat

At last there was no more to say, and I stood there in the December sunshine
Watching a squirrel run along the fence where Marmalade used to sit
Then bade my friends "Sleep well forever"
Turned and walked away from the house where we used to live
And the old elm tree where I laid my little friends to rest so long ago

It's always good to visit old friends
To catch up and remember
Remember the good things!
